About our rating systemPhotojournalism is the emphasis here, which shouldn’t be surprising considering ICP was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa, brother of eminent war photographer Robert Capa (Cornell was a photographer in his own right as well). When you visit, expect to see probing, investigative photography that will illuminate a recent conflict, social ill, or cultural movement (like what imagery means in the era of cell phone photography, a recent blockbuster show). In addition, the museum often explores the world of art photography, with video pieces, collage, and other works that test the bounds of the form in interesting ways.
The museum is set in a massive, Lower East Side site right across from the Essex Market, one of the city's best food courts. Along with galleries, the museum has a lovely gift store (with lots of photography books), and a cafe.
